  • Masks: The use of masks can be a great symbol to use to represent the theme "Appearance versus Reality." Characters hide their true intentions (as if wearing a mask) in many of Shakespeare's plays. This is particularly true in Hamlet, where Hamlet frequently acts oddly to achieve a hidden tactic.

  • Fog: There are elements of the supernatural in Hamlet, and these supernatural elements often appear at night and under the protection of mist/fog. Beyond being spooky, fog is a wonderful symbol to represent the unexpected and unknown.

  • Actors: Hamlet discusses the role of actors more than most Shakespeare plays, as well as what it means to put on a show. Actors are courageous and often beautiful, but they can also be deceptive. They put on a role and pretend to be someone they are not. Hamlet does this in the play, as do others. The depiction of actors can be a helpful way to elucidate the theme of "Appearance versus Reality."
