How has the work that African-Americans do changed from the 1920s to the present?

There is a difference regarding the work of African-Americans in the 1920s and their work today. The main difference is in the opportunities they have today compared to the opportunities they had in the 1920s.


Opportunities for African-Americans were very limited in the 1920s. In the movie industry, African-Americans rarely played leading roles. They tended to play supporting roles, and those roles were very stereotypical. For example, they often played maids or butlers. Today, African-Americans...

Opportunities for African-Americans were very limited in the 1920s. In the movie industry, African-Americans rarely played leading roles. They tended to play supporting roles, and those roles were very stereotypical. For example, they often played maids or butlers. Today, African-Americans have leading roles in different movies.


African-Americans had limited opportunities in other jobs also. In some cases, they couldn’t even get hired due to discrimination. They had to protest to get the opportunity to work in federal defense plants during World War II. They often didn’t receive promotions or hold managerial jobs. Today, African-Americans have more opportunities in these areas.


African-Americans have gained more opportunities in sports. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball in 1947. Southern universities that would never consider offering a black athlete a scholarship now do that routinely. The number of African-American quarterbacks in the NFL has increased. African-Americans also own sports teams. There are many more opportunities for African-Americans in the sports world.


The number of African-American owned businesses has increased. African-Americans used to work for white employers. African-Americans now own their own construction companies, grocery stores, hardware shops, and restaurants.
