In "Thank You, Ma'm", what does the boy's response to the woman tell you about his personality?

There is a kindness within Roger.  This can be seen when he asks Mrs. Jones if she needs "somebody to go to the store."  He recognizes that she is being generous to him, providing care and structure for him when no one else does. Roger further shows his kind personality in how he listens to her.  Roger is so overtaken with Mrs. Jones's gesture that he is speechless at the end of the story.  He is overcome because he possesses his own kindness has been matched with Mrs. Jones's.  This reflects  his compassionate personality.

While he did do a bad thing, Hughes humanizes Roger by showing that people are more than their worst act. Hhughes is able to illuminate this idea in displaying Roger's kind and compassionate personality.  Roger's kindness is a reminder that beneath many people exists something good.
