What are the feelings of the monster up to Ch. 15?

The monster feels many things in these chapters, and some of these emotions appear multiple times. It is important to note that we really do not begin to know what the monster is feeling until Ch. 10, however, as the narration has been by Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein up to that point. The monster feels many things in these chapters, and some of these emotions appear multiple times. It is important to note that we really do not begin to know what the monster is feeling until Ch. 10, however, as the narration has been by Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein up to that point. Although the narration continues in Ch. 10 by Victor, he encounters the monster there, who begins to tell his story, and the monster's narration tells us this about his feelings:

  • he has felt "miserably alone"

  • he wants Victor to look upon him with "goodness and compassion"

  • he feels at home out in the middle of no where, in the cold and harsh elements because they are kinder to him than people have been so far

  • he hates those who "abhor" him .

  • When he was first created he felt very frightened and confused.

"I was a poor, helpless, miserable wreath; I knew and could distinguish nothing" (Ch. 11).

  • he feels hunger, cold, heat, and every other sensation normal people feel. He gets "pleasure" when he is able to start a fire to warm himself.

  • negative interactions with villagers cause him to be scared to interact with people, so he stays in his hovel

  • he is interested in, feels compassion for, and is kind to the cottagers

  • he feels rejected by them when they chase him off

  • he is angry at Victor and anyone who rejects him

  • his anger turns to vengeance for Victor

  • he wants to love and be loved
