To develop this essay, I recommend considering these relationships: Aibileen and Minny; Miss Celia and Johnny; Skeeter and Constantine; and Minny and Miss Celia. All reflect friendship or love. Aibileen and Minny have been best friends for many years and have seen each other through a variety of challenges. Miss Celia and Johnny obviously love one another so much that neither the rebuffs of the Junior League nor the prospect of not having children can deter their commitment. The friendships of Skeeter and Constantine and Minny and Miss Celia are of a different sort, of course, but are equally important. Perhaps they are even more so, because they cross the color divide. All of these people need the others in their lives. For contrast, consider Skeeter’s fractured friendship with Hilly Holbrook and her romance with Stuart Whitworth. Since the book's main plot concerns the relationships between the white and black residents of Jackson, these personal relationships reflect the larger issue at hand—civil rights. The more people can care about individuals, the more they can care about the diverse population as a whole.
