Can I get sick from rubbing a dirty tissue in my eyes?

You might not get a general infection, but eye infections are commonly gotten from foreign bodies touching the eyes.  While tears and mucous membranes keep the eyes safe from most germs, they are not able to cope with very dirty things.  Unless the tissue was quite dirty, you should be fine.  However, if your eyes itch and begin to turn red, you may need to see an optometrist or general physician about some eye drops....

You might not get a general infection, but eye infections are commonly gotten from foreign bodies touching the eyes.  While tears and mucous membranes keep the eyes safe from most germs, they are not able to cope with very dirty things.  Unless the tissue was quite dirty, you should be fine.  However, if your eyes itch and begin to turn red, you may need to see an optometrist or general physician about some eye drops.  Fortunately, eye infections are quite common in humans as well as animals (conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is one of the leading examples of this) so early treatment should fix whatever is wrong, if anything. 


In the future, I would recommend using clean tissues and washing your hands before and after contact with the eyes.  This protocol should also be followed when touching the mouth and nose as well.
