Species within the animal kingdom all share certain characteristics. For example, all animals are made of eukaryotic cells, are multicellular because they are made of more than one cell, and are consumers (heterotrophic). However, there is also a vast array of differences amongst species within the animal kingdom. One such difference is the number of heart chambers found amongst vertebrates. Vertebrates can have two, three, or four heart chambers. Most fish have a two-chamber heart that consists of one atrium and one ventricle. Most reptiles and amphibians contain a three-chamber heart that is composed of a single ventricle and two atria. Lastly, a four-chamber heart is found in most birds and mammals. A four-chamber heart is made of two atria and two ventricles.
