Rikki-tikki-tavi is forced to fight and kill both Nag and Nagaina throughout the short story. Nag and Nagiana are husband and wife and share similar goals, specifically, they wish to rid the garden of Rikki-tikki in order to save their unhatched children. They both inhabit the garden behind the bungalow and attempt to kill Rikki-tikki and his human family members. Nag is a large male cobra, who is the first to make his presence known to Rikki in the garden. Nag also becomes Rikki-tikki's second victim when he is killed in the bathroom of the bungalow. Nagaina is "Nag's wicked wife," who mourns the death of her husband and threatens revenge by promising to bite Teddy. Fortunately, Rikki threatens to destroy her last unhatched child, and she attempts to escape with her egg intact as Rikki follows her into her hole. Rikki-tikki-tavi successfully kills Nagaina at the end of the story and protects the family against the two wicked cobras.
