How can I write a final goodbye to Gerry Bertier from Ray's perspective in Remember the Titans?

I assume your assignment is to compose that letter based on what we know of Ray from the film.  If so, here are some points to consider.

  • Ray was Gerry's best friend and go-to teammate before the integration of the school and football team.  When the new players came in, Gerry and Ray were stubborn and did not want to get to know or play alongside any of the black players.

  • Gerry's view of the black teammates changed during their pre-season camp.  He realized that he would need to swallow his pride and get to know the new people around him if they were going to have any success.  Ray didn't quite feel the same.

  • Ray began to see that he was being supplanted as Gerry's best friend by Julius Campbell, one of the new black players.  After a memorable win, Gerry went out with Julius and some of the other players, while Ray wanted him to join their old friends, including Gerry's girlfriend. When Gerry declined the invitation, Ray was dumbfounded and Gerry was told to get his "priorities straight."

  • Ray was eventually kicked off the team, per Gerry's decision, because he was intentionally missing blocks so the black teammates would be tackled. The final straw for Gerry was when one missed block led to the quarterback breaking his arm.

With all these points considered, what do you think Ray would have like to say to Gerry?  It is not clear in the film whether the two reconciled. We know that Julius and Gerry continued their friendship long after Gerry's accident, but not much is shown about Ray.

I hope this helps give some inspiration for your assignment.  If it were mine, I would probably view Ray's letter as his attempt to make amends. Though Gerry will never read it, I would assume that Ray had some things he wanted to get off his chest about their broken relationship from high school.
