Nick Naylor is the face of the cigarette industry in his role as a lobbyist. He speaks for tobacco companies to keep regulations in their favor. He's aware of his position and its ethical implications but doesn't really care about the negative impacts of doing his job well.

Naylor is believed to be kidnapped by anti-smoking radicals. They stick nicotine patches all over his body before releasing him; he almost dies. After the kidnapping, he's more famous and influential than ever.

Later, the FBI is suspicious that Naylor kidnapped himself. They find a cabin rented in Naylor's name and his fingerprints on boxes of the same nicotine patches that almost killed him. He is arrested. Naylor discovers that his boss BR and coworker Jeanette planned the kidnapping to have Naylor killed. They both wanted him out of the Academy of Tobacco Studies where they work.
